Sunny week ahead for farmers as planting resumes

Sunshine and warm temperatures are forecast through the week with a chance of rain late Tuesday. Farmers, still behind from last week’s six inch rainfall, welcome drier days to finish corn planting. Kenneth Shifflett, Frederick County extension agent, says 7 to 10 days of good weather are needed to plant the remaining corn acreage, with nationwide and local implications. Last year by now 90 to 95 percent was planted locally. this year only about half is in due to rain. Crops such as clover and timothy grew 10 to 12 inches during the downpour, and hay crops have since grown similarly.

PSC affirms June 12 fuel cost hearing for PE in Frederick

The Maryland Public Service Commission ruled that Potomac Edison must proceed with the June 12 public hearing in Frederick on fuel rate adjustment charges. PSC hearing examiner Kirk Emge rejected PE’s claim that 1978 General Assembly changes and prior hearings negate the need for the June session. Maryland law requires public utilities using automatic fuel cost pass-through to justify charges every six months.

Frederick Fair to Host All Star Week of Shows

Frederick Fair has announced September 19 to 23 with an all star line up. Wartyafer and Stella Parton open the week on Tuesday, demolition derby on Wednesday, Conway Twitty and Charley Pride perform Thursday and Friday evenings, and Jack Kochman and Hell Drivers close Saturday with two shows. Dr James E McClellan says catalogs are printing and grounds have new improvements.

Three Drown In Potomac In Weekend Boating Accidents

Weekend Potomac River tragedy near Williamsport and Hancock left three men dead after their boats capsized in swift waters. Victims: Thomas W. Lewis 37 of Silver Spring Robert L. Hanson 24 and James S. Shatzer from Falling Water West Virginia. Rescue efforts hampered by rocks and strong current. Divers, grappling hooks and a state police helicopter search continued as authorities warned against river use.

Nine named to special panel on library site

County commissioners appointed a nine member committee to report within 90 days whether the Warfield property on West Patrick Street can host the new county public library cost effectively. Maryland Congresswoman Barbara Mikulski addressed Hood College graduates urging women to take risks and pursue their beliefs. She cited Sojourner Truth Marian Anderson and Eleanor Roosevelt, noting history's defenders of rights. The ceremony honored Dr Estelle R Ramey and actress Jean Stapleton with honorary degrees. The stock market in New York showed little movement as Dow slipped to 646.15 in early trading.
