Proper Manure Spreading Practices for Water Protection
Guidelines emphasize spreading manure only on proper land, avoiding snow or frozen ground to prevent water pollution. Storage must fit herd size, and timing depends on weather to avoid overflow. Choose erosion resistant sites with cover crops, use contour applications, keep 20 to 36 feet from waterways, and maintain records. For details contact Catoctin and Frederick Soil Conservation Districts.

Colorado Rodent Costs Hit Farmers Hard
A Colorado survey shows rodents cost farmers and ranchers 16.8 million dollars annually in lost crops and extra expenses. The 1990 study, covering 1989 losses, found 6 million infested acres from 9,046 mailed surveys and 2,943 responses. Local farmers describe worsening rodent problems and lobbying for 100,000 dollars to control pests, a request trimmed by Gov. Romer. Government eradication staff have dwindled to one expert and a part time assistant.
