Hagerstown Women Seek Defense Jobs in Region
About 400 to 500 Hagerstown area women seek work in defense industries or jobs paying defense-level salaries. Matthew White of the state employment office says many want to supplement family income and reject the 75 cent minimum wage. He cites a labor shortage from a construction boom and machinist, construction, and clerical needs. He notes high school graduates will be absorbed, with many already employed before graduation.
