Rail unions seek clarification on White House wage plan
Three major rail unions asked for clarification of the White House plan to settle the three year labor dispute with railroads. Union leaders met about three hours with John Steelman, the president’s adviser, and indicated they might accept the proposals tomorrow if controversial operating rules are addressed. The plan would deliver retroactive wage increases totaling about 19 million dollars to members of the Brotherhoods of Engineers Conductors Firemen and Engine-men, though unions remained wary on rule changes at the heart of the dispute.
