Policy toward China signals shift in recognition rules
The United States adopts a policy not to recognize governments under foreign control, rejecting puppet regimes and reaffirming support for a legitimate national government in China. The stance, voiced by John Rusk and aligned with historic Hay ideals, aims to bolster Nationalists on Formosa, empower anti Communist forces on the mainland, and influence Britain to redraw recognition standards against Moscow aligned regimes. It could influence UN admission rules and spur broader free-nation solidarity, though for now it declares Red China ineligible for U.S. recognition.
