Starter fertilizer boosts yields for transplanting crops

Vegetable crop specialists report that starter solutions, high analysis soluble fertilizers mixed with water, boost yields and profits when used at transplanting for tomatoes cabbage head lettuce and other crops. Edward K. Bender says the practice costs about two dollars per acre with returns many times that amount. Transplanters should deliver about one quarter to one half pint per plant, with roughly 80 gallons needed per acre for tomatoes spaced three by six feet. Starter solutions can be bought or made from ordinary complete fertilizers, though some root burning may occur when home prepared.
