Potomac Edison seeks first rate increase in 48 years
Potomac Edison Company filed with the Maryland Public Service Commission for general retail rate increases the first time in 48 years. Executive VP J M McCardell said the rise would bring about 4 million dollars more annual revenue, with typical residential bills rising about 12 dollars yearly for 4 800 kWh users and about 32 dollars for 24 000 kWh users. The company cites inflation, higher plant costs, borrowing, fuel, labor, materials, and growing environmental expenditures as drivers, and notes Maryland customers have seen 18 rate reductions since 1923 while PE serves over 99,000 customers in multiple counties. West Virginia’s PE subsidiary plans to file later this month.

Frederick City's United Fire Company approved John Howard as the first active black volunteer fireman among its 225 members. A Boonsboro man, John Franklin Reese, 22, was critically injured in a single car crash on U S 40 A near Mt Tabor Road just after 3 20 a m. He was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital and then to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where he remained in critical condition. A spokesman said Reese lost control, drove off the road, the car traveled about 200 feet and overturned after striking a rock. excessive speed and driver error were noted factors.
