Mrs McKinley’s condition improved enough to sit up briefly on May 20 in San Francisco. Gen Shafter visited President McKinley, and the news of her sitting up spread through the house. The president hurried to the sick room as the anxious public relief followed a prior bulletin about higher temperature.

President’s Host Reports Comfort After Fever Subside
