Five miles south of Bayfield a bottle containing a faded note from the 40 passengers of the steamer Manistee is discovered buried in Chequamgon bay sand. The dated message from November 28, 1592 describes the ship leaving Bayfield and fearing survival in a storm as the wooden steamer sank with all aboard.
