Hughes pleas for safety net for thrifts
Governor Harry Hughes urged the Maryland General Assembly to pass seven emergency bills to shield 102 privately insured savings and loan associations. He warned of crisis and a possible special session next Tuesday to ease the threat, including allowing out of state banks to buy failing S&Ls and seeking exceptions to the $1,000 withdrawal limit for payroll and mortgage accounts.

City man charged in Montgomery embezzling scheme
Montgomery County Education employee Stevenson P. Bryan turned himself in on a $1.1 million embezzlement charge tied to a medical benefits plan for school staff. State's Attorney Andrew L. Sonner said Bryan, a 20 year employee, confessed after an internal audit flagged missing funds. He is hospitalized after a suicide risk assessment. The scheme spanned October 1979 to late 2000, with funds used for medical expenses tied to his wife's illness who died last July. Prosecutors said $600,000 in double eagle coins and the deed to a 10 acre Millstone area farm were turned over to investigators. Sonner said Bryan sought money to care for his children and wife. He described Bryan as grieving and deeply troubled.
