Mine Disaster at Farmington Claims Six Lives
Fairmont West Virginia May 16 six miners died and several were injured in an explosion at the George's Creek Coal and Iron Company mine in Farmington seven miles from the city on the Baltimore and Ohio main line. The blast followed a torch carried into the mine despite warnings, trapping workers in sections of the mine with one leading to the surface shaft. The disaster, first of its kind in the region, caused extensive surface damage and halted operations while rescuers evacuated remaining workers.
