Jefferson School Honors Its Volunteer of the Year
John Lynn Shanton II received the 2001 Jefferson School Volunteer of the Year award for decades of service since 1996. He served on an advisory board, helped found the Jefferson School Foundation, aided capital fundraising and the Discovery program, recruited board members, and arranged partnerships with the Frederick County Builders Association and the Frederick Arts Council. He sits on multiple local boards including the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club, and owns Strategic Marketing Group. The Jefferson School is a special education and residential facility in Jefferson, part of Sheppard Pratt Health System.

Bechtel Power Corp. manager of marketing and public relations Robert E. Palmer presents a 5000 donation from the Bechtel Foundation to the Frederick Festival of the Arts. Diana Foor FFOTA executive director accepts the gift. The eighth annual festival runs June 2 and 3 at Carroll Creek Linear Park on South Market Street.

Teens Tour Promotes Perseverance Through Bike Challenge
More than 150 Maryland teens will complete the six day Cycle Across Maryland Tour earning a new bike and lessons on perseverance. The event runs July 20 26 from Freder ick to northeast Maryland, created by CAM Corp to push teens and mentors beyond limits. Proceeds fund helmet safety programs and CAMs mentoring.

Sister city cyclists to roll into town this fall
The Frederick Sister Cities Association plans a fall visit from Schifferstadt Germany cyclists to continue a bicycle tour exchange started last May. Funds via Cycling jerseys sponsorship are sought, with Chamber of Commerce of Frederick County and Gary Brooks backing beer-named brews. The Peperone family, Trout family, and Whee Rase shop support biking events and trails efforts.
