Regents Veto Student Control Of Dorms At UM

Regents vote to grant campus chancellors control over dormitory policies at the University of Maryland including coed dorms and visiting hours. They rejected student self governance, citing parental opposition. Chancellor Charles E Bishop may authorize a coed dorm with unrestricted visiting next September. Action follows a two part policy: more diversity in dorms and campus level policy changes. Independent campus publications to be run by separate corporations. A nine member commission recommended the plan after deliberations on separating publications from university control.
