Washington May 15 The first step toward increasing eastern freight rates was filed when fifty two rail lines east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission to reopen the eastern advance case decided against them three years ago. The commission will consider the request but has no guarantee of hearings before summer recess. The carriers seek a five percent across the board rise on all through freight New York to Chicago, arguing current taxes, grade crossings, and rising costs leave railroads unable to provide just compensation.

Jack Johnson, the heavyweight champion, was found guilty on seven counts of transporting Beile Schreiber from Pittsburgh to Chicago in 1910 under federal white slave laws. Maximum penalty is up to 10 years and $10,900 fine. he was released on $10,000 bond after a judge overruled confinement.
