Baby Killed In Auto Crash Near Lewistown

A 10 month old girl, Virginia Darlene Hawes of Thurmont, died after a head on crash on Route 15 near Lewistown. Her father Hawes drove a panel truck. Anthony C. Potenza of Buffalo, N. C. in a 1950 Oldsmobile is being treated and held on manslaughter charges. Four Army passengers in Potenza’s car suffered minor injuries. Potenza faces state police transfer after Camp Detrick hospital care.

Caveat Filed By Relatives Of Miss Scholl

Six relatives filed in Orphans Court a caveat to the alleged will of Laura E. Scholl claiming she died intestate. Johnsville family appeals for public help locating 14-year-old Ervin Eisenhower, last seen Thursday morning walking toward Liberty from Metz store with air rifle and school books. He wore blue denim dungarees and a Norwegian sweater, about 5 feet 9 inches, 150 pounds, light brown hair, blue eyes, missing since 8:40 am en route to Notre Dame Academy Libertytown. Reward offered. State Police alerted. He is active in 4-H and had no money with him.

Armed Forces Week Activities Planned in Frederick Maryland

A week of observances for Armed Forces Day includes school assemblies, film shows, displays, and a Saturday open house at Camp Detrick. Col Creasy and Col Delmore will address Rotary and Lions clubs, with a Lincoln High School program and a 2 PM parade ground ceremony featuring the Legion drum corps and a deaf drill team.

Metal Found On Farm Believed Plane Part

A disc shaped metal piece about 10 pounds was found Sunday on Anthony Main’s farm along Monocacy east of Frederick. Authorities believe it is part of a jet that dropped heavier pieces on April 20 near Frederick and Camp Detrick.

Army To Build Up Alaskan Garrison

Washington May 14 The military plans to use regular army units to meet congressional demands for a buildup of the Alaskan garrison while keeping Federal National Guard divisions for other tasks. A regular Army regimental combat team may be the first major addition to the force guarding Alaska against a possible Soviet attempt to gain a foothold there. The narrow Bering Straits separate Alaska from Soviet Siberia.

Unionville Skies Drop To 33 As Frost Nips May Crops

Unionville and surrounding counties endured a near cold snap with readings dipping into the 30s. Official lows ranged to 36 at the airport and 40 at the state police barracks, frost scattered on exposed areas, yet fruit losses were minimal with peaches, apples and strawberries mostly spared as orchardists anticipate a fine crop if harvest help is available. The Weather Bureau said frost danger is past with temperatures rising toward 70, then warming beyond tonight into a fair Tuesday signaling the start of straw hat season.

Burglars Foiled In Safe Robbery At S S Kresge Store

Burglars hammered at the safe in the S S Kresge Five and Ten Cent Store at 26 North Market street early today but fled empty handed after triggering a burglar alarm. They entered via a side door, damaged a window, and could not open the safe despite using a hammer and screwdriver. Police investigated. no suspects found.

Auto Crash Leaves Man Injured Near Hagerstown

William Mitchell, 67, of Hagerstown, is in serious condition at Washington County Hospital after a two car crash on Route 40 near South Mountain Sunday night. He suffered a possible skull fracture, eye injury, head lacerations, and possible internal injuries. he may lose sight in his left eye. The other driver was unidentified.

Maryland road plan outlines 60 miles new highways

The State Roads Commission chairmen announced major Maryland highway projects for 1951 including 60 miles of new roads and 130 miles of widening and resurfacing from Route 40 to Ridgeville and the Washington National Pike to Clarksburg. Extensions to expressways and the Jessup road will be advertised, with emphasis on safety and economy. A separate collision on North Market Street damaged a car. William Eyler and William Ritter involved, Eyler preliminarily charged with failing to yield.

Wind Body Of Man Missing Five Months In Oslo Fjord

The body of Lyford Moore of Americas Broadcasting Company, missing since December 10, was found in Oslo fjord. Authorities say no violence signs but further investigation continues. Chinese forces widened a bridgehead across the Choyam river on the central Korean front near Chun Kchon, as US and UN patrols encountered limited opposition elsewhere along the 100 mile front. Frederick High School Band Wins Two Prizes in Washington Parade

Frederick High School band under Sperry L. Storm won first place among Maryland bands and third among all entrants at the 8th annual parade of school safety patrols in Washington. About 500 students from Frederick and county schools rode on eleven buses funded by local business houses and clubs. The Frederick contingent was sponsored by the Automobile Club of Maryland, with a $25 third prize certificate and a trophy for Maryland’s top band.

Marshall reports sizeable Soviet buildup near Korea

Secretary Marshall testified before Senate committees that the Soviet Union has increased its military garrisons near Korea since December, while reiterating that doubling ground and sea fighting would not by itself defeat Red China in Korea. He said air power alone could not prevent a Chinese invasion, and noted differing views on bombing Manchurian bases as a path to ending the war.

Aldermen Create Administrative Assistant Post in City Office

The mayor and Aldermen establish an administrative assistant to the City Engineer, effective June 4, to handle non technical duties and speed projects. Joseph F. Eisenhauer is named to the post, while remaining Secretary to the Board under the new charter. Eisenhauer brings 17 years as Clerk to the Board and a long Frederick News-Post background.
