Rail Strike Deadlocked Across Major Lines

Chicago May 12 the Nation al Railway Mediation Board chairman Francis O Neil Jr said the locomotive firemen strike is just as deadlocked as at the start after a meeting with rail lines. He noted no new offer from the union and that a Washington return is not planned. Hope rose briefly over a reported union peace proposal, but officials remained cautious as violence escalated and 200000 workers were idle. The strike involved Pennsylvan ia, New York Central, Southern and Santa Fe lines, with incidents from a bullet fired in Elkhart to a derailment in Cleveland. Supervisory crews were moved to operate trains, while police guarded freight moves in Columbus and Knoxville areas.
