Defeat of Program Seen by Senator Taft in 81st Congress
Washington May 12 Senator Taft Republican Ohio predicted defeat for much of President Truman’s legislative program. He said eight of 13 members of the Senate Labor Committee oppose national health insurance, potentially blocking it from a floor vote. Taft warned of high taxes if Truman’s program passes and urged steep spending cuts to avoid a tax rise. He noted a general weakening of administration push on social welfare and regulatory bills. The talk came at a lumbermen’s gathering.
