Tax Exemption for Railroad Property Still In Question
Officials say recent findings do not alter immunity from Maryland taxation for property used for railroad purposes. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, under an 1828 charter drafted by John W. L. McMahon, maintains tax exemption despite Court of Appeals decisions. Legal and financial experts note potential effects on bond financing and state amendments aimed at preserving inducements for special charters.

Freight rate rises eyed by commission in eastern territory
Washington May 13 A conference of the interstate commerce commission and customer representatives will meet tomorrow to consider an informal advance of five tenths of a per cent in freight rates. The move would apply to eastern territory east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio rivers. President Willard of the Baltimore and Ohio said two eastern roads would apply for permission to raise rates five per cent. The form of the application is undecided and will be settled at tomorrow's meeting. If prima facie reasons exist for no consideration an inquiry order may be issued. Tariffs filed would cost railroads about a quarter of a million dollars and could be suspended during investigation.
