In Orangeburg South Carolina five white men were tried for lynching a Black man. After about fifteen minutes the jury returned a not guilty verdict. The state's main witness claimed to have been in the attacking party while the defense produced wives and relatives asserting the defendants were in bed at home when the crime occurred.

Tierbert Ve Croker son of ex New York Tammany leader Croker was found dead on a train near Newton Kansas after an alleged opium poisoning. A porter Charles Woodson aided Croker at Kansas City Union Station. Croker traveled to Bliss Ohio for a vacation, with a letter to a ranch manager found on him. Seven killed in a Cora mine explosion at Butte Montana. Brown University fire destroys valuable zoological specimens. Kingstonian fire aboard a steamer near Boston led to prolonged blaze.

Four men died and many were seriously burned when a massive gas holder exploded at United Gas Improvement Company in Philadelphia Point Breeze. The blast sent a scorching wave 200 feet, setting houses and buildings alight as workers fled. Ambulances and hospitals treated dozens while crews battled fires and a gas cloud chase.
New York May 14 Nan Patterson, freed from custody after three mistrials in a murder case, was greeted by about 2000 cheering supporters near the courthouse.
