Western states lead in per capita income as gap narrows
Census data show Westerners had the highest per capita income in the nation at $10,265, while the regional gap between rich and poor narrowed from 26.2 percentage points in 1970 to 17.4 by 1980. Reasons include more similar industrial mix, broader federal aid, and wage convergence across regions. Alaska tops 1980 at $12,790, Connecticut drops to second, California rises to third, Wyoming moves higher as noted by BEA analysts.
