Reagan pushes for aid as House panel approves El Salvador funds
The House Foreign Affairs Committee voted 36 to 1 to authorize 65 million dollars for the Salvadoran Army for the coming fiscal year, 15 million above the prior subcommittee but 20 million below the administration request. Funds would be cut off 90 days after approval if Salvadoran officials refuse unconditional peace talks with leftist guerrillas. Francisco Jose Guerrero, spokesman for interim President Magana, rejected the conditions and said negotiations with rebels are not possible, suggesting rebels could run candidates in December elections if they wished to share power.
