Budget debate stirs board over fund use in July
The board weighs tapping one twentieth of a $500 000 fund to augment regular appropriations in July as welfare costs exceed monthly budgets by about $8 000. The welfare director notes the fiscal year starting July 1 limits monthly spending to $486 986, with caseloads for March pushing beyond that. Tawes opposes dipping into the contingent fund before the new year. The prosecuting witness in a separate case cannot be located for trial. James D Carver, accused of defrauding Elliott Hopf of $680, has moved to Virginia and been released from jail where he was held awaiting trial.
