Seaway approval ends long Congress battle and shapes future
Congress approves the St. Lawrence Seaway ending a postwar war of attrition. The plan gives the Midwest a direct Atlantic outlet for iron ore and coal, with Canada also benefitting. The United States estimate is 105 million, likely low, and deeper channel work may follow. Security concerns influenced the decision, with Canada wavering on participation. Future Congresses face higher, costlier issues.

Contributions Not Made Board Alleges Haller Snyder In Court
In Clarksburg Haller Snyder faced a circuit court warning from Associate Judge Patrick M Sechnauffer not to resume lumber business until he pays unemployment compensation contributions owed to the Maryland Unemployment Security Board. The board says Snyder owes about 318 dollars dating back to 1951, though his attorney puts the figure near 200 dollars. An injunction from 1951 barred business until payment, later modified by a stipulation allowing operation as payments were made, which the board says has not been honored.
