NEC unit to pay 34 million to settle bid rigging claims

NEC Information Technologies agreed to pay 34 million dollars to the U S government to settle charges of bid rigging on Yokota Air Base contracts between 1981 and 1988. The company allegedly won 27 telecommunications contracts by colluding with competitors to secure excess profits. The case prompted a strong message against bid rigging on U S funded projects in Japan. The Japanese Fair Trade Commission also fined NEC Information Technologies and two smaller firms for violating anti monopoly law in bidding on Yokota contracts.
