Frederick County Leader Dies at 71 Hooper
U Grant Hooper longtime Frederick County official died at his home 241 Dill avenue in the yard. He was 71 and death stemmed from a cerebral hemorrhage. Hooper served in the State Legislature 1924 1930 and five consecutive terms as County Commissioner beginning in 1934, presiding 1951 1954. He helped organize the Maryland Association of County Commissioners and led Western Shore affairs. He owned The Leather Shop at 218 North Market and held banking and church leadership roles. Surviving: wife five children three sisters two brothers and several grandchildren. Funeral set for Saturday at Pleasant Hill Lutheran Church with burial in nearby cemetery.

Seven Die in Auto Race Pileup on Ohio Highway
A three car crash on Ohio 7 near Middleport killed seven people and injured two others. Victims included Marshall McCor Sr and six members of the McCoy and Halley families from Cheshire and Middleport. The driver, John Charter Smith, 71, was speeding to pass another car when his vehicle struck a station wagon carrying the Halleys and McCoys.
