Parents push for better vocational education in Maryland
Maryland educators and industry leaders told the Commission on Education in Agriculture that public understanding of vocational training is weak. They argued for stronger awareness of agricultural careers, higher enrollment in vocational tracks, and better counselor guidance to counter the stigma that vocational ed is for failures. The panel, led by James E. McClellan, heard from more than 25 participants and will issue findings to Gov. Schaefer with a final report planned for September.

Attendance sparse at Frederick County voting task force hearing
A Frederick County public hearing on the three year old computerized voting system drew about a dozen attendees with five speakers. Voter education ballots readability and large print were urged while concerns over overvoting in 1986 and calls for roving assistants and instructional aids were voiced. Officials noted legal hurdles for color coded ballots and device costs for overvoting alerts were high but possible through separate scanners. The task force meets again May 14 and will report to the county commissioners by September.
