Debt reduction without legislation predicted this year
The national debt is expected to fall by at least two billion dollars by June 30, leaving about 274 billion. Tax anticipation securities due in June will be paid without new financing, savings bonds mature, and trust fund issues add up to a total reduction near five billion. A surplus of seven billion is suspected but not admitted, allowing optional debt cuts from cash balance if needed. Additionally, Oppenheimer will lecture at the Naval Research Laboratory, and biophysicists study tiger whiskers and other materials to map protein structures.
