Transit tax drive divides Maryland officials over funds
The 1984 Maryland push for a regional transit tax aims to fund Baltimore City and WMATA deficits, drawing fire from rural legislators. DOT projects over 30 million in next year and 120 million over five years, with counties losing 45 million for local highways. Debate centers on diverting fuel and corporate taxes, local payroll or sales taxes, and balancing transit needs with rural road funding as costs rise and ridership faces fare increases.
