County budget battle tests new Frederick County board
As the July 1 budget year approaches, Frederick County's five new commissioners weigh tax rates, service levels, and funding for capital projects. They face pressure for spending cuts while preserving teacher raises and key CIP items like the courthouse complex library and a new jail. Growth drives needs for medical centers in Woodsboro New Market and Frederick, plus airport expansion funded partly by state and federal money. The school CIP must rank top priority amid population growth and overcrowding concerns. The panel must shield taxpayers from excess while ensuring essential services and capital projects proceed.
