Mark Twain plan stirs fear for wildlife in Missouri
Environmentalists led by Joan Kare challenge the Mark Twain National Forest long term plan arguing it prioritizes timber cuts over wilderness. They warn threatened species like the red cockaded woodpecker and black bear could lose habitat while the Forest Service touts wildlife protection and regional biologist input. The dispute, echoed by Wilderness Society and Missouri groups, hinges on 50 year harvest projections and wilderness preservation versus economic gain.
