Fire consumes 25 000 acres in Michigan to aid rare warbler
A prescribed burn aimed at creating habitat for the Kirtland's warbler turned disastrous as winds pushed flames across Oscoda and Alcona counties, burning 25 000 acres by 7 am. One Forest Service technician died, dozens of homes and 42 Mack Lake sites were destroyed, and about 1 000 residents were evacuated. Firefighters from multiple states aided the effort while the endangered birds, nesting only in Huron National Forest, may return later.
