Chaos on the University of Maryland campus ended after students clashed with police, injuries reported, 46 arrests, and a state of emergency imposed by Gov. Marvin Mandel. National Guard patrols and a curfew followed as authorities feared further demonstrations in College Park near Washington, D.C.
A soaking rain reached Frederick last night and persisted intermittently today. The county logged .58 inch during the night, with yesterday’s high at 75 and a low of 38. Temperatures will stay in the upper 60s to low 70s today, dipping to the low 50s tonight as clouds increase. Friday partners with low 70s and little rain, a fair weekend ahead with 70s and sunshine for gardening Saturday and Mother's Day outdoors. An extended outlook shows a chance of showers early next week but mild daytime temperatures.

The Frederick County Board of Education appointed Thomas Shade as principal of Green Valley School and Hugh Nolan as principal of Walkersville Elementary School. Shade, a Frederick High graduate, has degrees from Frederick Community College and the University of Maryland and is pursuing a master’s at Western Maryland College. Nolan, a Frostburg State College graduate, began teaching in Frederick in 1958 and has led Title I programs since 1969. He will replace Neil J. Shipman who resigned.
The official Barbara Fritchie cane, taken at her death on December 18, 1862 by undertaker F Schroeder and Sons, is now at the Barbara Fritchie Museum thanks to George T Schroeder Jr the great grandson of Frederick Schroeder. The tale recalls Frederick Schroeder born 1815 in Hesse Darmstadt a cabinet maker turned undertaker whose son and George A Schroeder once helped at Monocacy Battlefield and later kept the cane a family secret.
Washington reports 12 000 arrests this week as antiwar protesters target the South Vietnamese Embassy and the city jail in a planned tactical retreat. Mayday and SCLC call for a rally then a 30 block march, though no permit was issued. 1160 jailed at a Capitol rally ended Wednesday.
SAIGON AP reported that 68 American battlefield deaths occurred last week. The figure includes 38 killed in action, 21 previously listed as missing now dead, and nine deaths from battle wounds. The toll marks the highest combat deaths in five weeks. Wounded in action totaled 592, the largest weekly total in seven months.
Maryland National Guard units remain on stand by near the College Park campus after last night order to patrol. Troopers from Frederick and Western Troops joined 28 state troopers plus four K-93 men under Capt. Samuel Conrad to clear U.S. 1 of protesters. A bed sheet banner reading ROTC must go was noted. Traffic flow was kept by Prince Georges County police while state police held protesters off the highway. Guardsmen moved in after 9 p.m. curfew to enforce order as campus protesters faded.
Routzahn's chosen last month as Brand Name Retailer of the Year among 2400 retailers held an appreciation dinner at Venice Restaurant in Hagerstown. Allen Routzahn thanked customers, employees, vendors, bankers, news media, and Whirlpool, sponsor of the contest. Sol Goldin of Whirlpool praised the program as vital for the Frederick Hagerstown trading area and store image, calling Brand Names retailing's finest hour.
