The annual report of the Frederick Clearing House Association shows bank clearings totaling 42,035,957.22 for the year ending May, an all time high and up from 32,752,672.67 last year. The two largest months were March at 412,126.20 and April at 369,735.88, with a dramatic rise continuing over the past seven years.
The Frederick magistrate term opened with one appointment pending. Governor Lane and Magistrate Edward Smith led traffic business in Peoples Court. Smith continues in role until a successor is appointed and qualified per Court of Appeals ruling.
May 4 1948 Baltimore reports PM Yanes of Cr as State Commissioner begins duties to staff. May 5 Hagerstown Washington County Hospital notes a baby boom with 184 births in April, up from 82 in April 1946. Male births outnumbered females by eight.
A joint city county clothing drive aims to aid about 10 000 overseas needy by supplying at least one garment per person. The drive raised 32 527 pounds of clothing with Frederick city contributing the majority and Brunswick still collecting. Rev John Metzler and Rev Bir Metzler spoke urging ongoing support and the local community spotlighted cooperation among churches organizations and youth groups.

Moscow May 5 Izvestia denounces U S Secretary of State George C Marshall for an incorrect appraisal of the Moscow Foreign Ministers conference in a radio address. The paper also criticizes Joan Foster Dulles for twisting facts in her summation of the talks.
Baltimore telephone service ran on an emergency generosity basis while talks continued between company officials and striking unions. August B. Haneke, general manager of the Chesapeake and Potomac Co., reported normal operations elsewhere in the state. Conciliator Thomas F. Yi and mediator Elmer T. Wayne West Virginia May 3 Oliver Hurley hunted by a posse after the killings of four relatives near Fort Gay was slain today by two special investigators. A coroner's jury ruled the deaths were by one man firing, Oliver Hurley, as authorities reported a dramatic multi location pursuit across Taber's Creek and Wildcat Hollow. The dead included Philops Hurley Nora Belle Skeens Sam Hurley and another, with two children wounded and a relative hospital bound in Louisa.
A cool front swept through bringing showers for the fifth day in a row. The Weather Bureau predicted a drop in temperature with a low near 42 degrees tonight and continued cool conditions tomorrow. Scattered showers occurred Saturday afternoon and again early this morning before a thunderstorm at 830 a.m. Winds were expected to shift from west to north today.
