Bosnian truce extension fails amid warnings of renewed war

In Sarajevo the Bosnian government refused to extend the frayed four month truce and vowed restraint if Serb forces avoid attacks and aid blockades. U N envoy Yasushi Akashi pressed to avert a full scale war as the cease fire nears expiration. Serb leader Radovan Karadzic demanded lifted sanctions on Yugoslavia before extending the cease fire while the Bihac area endured a deadly cluster bombing.

Fourteen Escape From Santa Clarita Jail

Fourteen maximum security prisoners escaped the Santa Clarita jail early Sunday, with ten still at large. Five fugitives face murder charges, two carjacking counts, and three drug-related charges. Four inmates were captured soon after. Over 100 deputies joined the chase, with a helicopter circling the area as the search continued. All escapees wore orange jumpsuits.

Reconciliation theme at Dachau commemorates 50th anniversary

About 2,000 survivors from 16 countries gathered at Dachau for the 50th anniversary of liberation. Polish survivor Jan Predki, 73, urged future peace and reconciliation, while Bavarian Governor Edmund Stoiber apologized for crimes. He praised liberating American troops and urged memory of Dachau’s horrors.

Biological parents win custody of Baby Richard in Chicago

After a four year custody battle Otakar Kirchner and his wife collected the boy known as Baby Richard from the suburban home of his adoptive parents. Kirchner had sought custody since January when the Illinois Supreme Court granted it and said a gradual transfer would ease the child’s transition. The adoptive parents Jane and John Doe fought the bid, while Kirchner said the immediate take was necessary despite the Does’ willingness to adjust custody gradually. The mother who gave up the child and Kirchner, now married, had believed the boy was dead at birth.

U.N. Reports 18 Returnees Killed as Rwanda Camps Close

In Rwanda, 18 returnees were beaten and stoned to death after returning to villages from refugee camps. The U.N. envoy urged granting peacekeepers authority to protect civilians amid the post genocide resettlement challenge. Most camp residents were Hutus while Tutsi-led forces now govern the country.
