Jail population more than doubles over past decade

The Justice Department says local jails held a record 490,442 inmates last year, more than double a decade earlier, driven by a surge in drug offenders. Black and Hispanic inmates predominate, with blacks nine times more likely to be jailed than whites.

Tuesday brings more occasional rain with凉 highs in the low to mid 50s and east winds 10 to 15 mph. Yesterday temperatures report several cities with varied readings. Extended outlook: lingering showers east Tuesday night, then partly cloudy Wednesday with 65 to 70, thunderstorms possible Thursday, high near 70 to 75, and Friday showers ending Friday morning.

Robber Who Robbed the ATM Ring Is Caught in Portland

In Portland Oregon police traced a large ATM theft ring led by David Gallagher who with four accomplices used stolen cards to rob 48 machines on November 18 and made 724 withdrawals exploiting a software flaw. A robber who stole from the robbers grabbed misplaced funds, recovering $60 000 of the loot. Justin Morris 20 Milwaukie was charged with robbery and weapons offenses while Gallagher and others pleaded guilty faces 10 months to four years. Sentencing set for June 26. $30,000 recovered with most of the cash still missing.

Two-car crash injures Mount Airy man on Buffalo Road

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office reports a Sunday afternoon collision on Buffalo Road at Old Bohn Road involving Kathleen Whyte, 44, of New Market driving a 1992 Toyota, crossing the center line into a southbound 1989 Chevrolet driven by Michael Bratburd, 18, of Mount Airy. Bratburd was treated and released from Frederick Memorial Hospital. No charges filed. investigation continues.

Baltimore drops suspension in rape claim case at North Bend

A 10-year-old girl who alleged rape by another student at North Bend Elementary had her suspension canceled and will be transferred to another school. School officials cited concern over a chilling effect and agreed to the transfer instead of punishment, reversing the prior discipline. Mayor Schmoke and Police Commissioner Frazier criticized the initial decision.

Man Arrested After Harassment At Frederick Restaurant

John J. Williams aged 26 was charged with trespassing and carrying a switchblade after being asked to leave Pargos Restaurant on Spectrum Drive for harassing a waitress. Deputies say he refused to depart despite three requests from the manager and was found with a switchblade during a post arrest search. He was released on his own recognizance.

Two troopers charged with solicitation in Pulaski Highway sting

Trooper Melvin Fialkowicz Jr and Trooper First Class Gregory Faulcon Jr were suspended with pay after being charged with solicitation in an undercover Baltimore County sting on Pulaski Highway. The incidents occurred within 90 minutes of each other as part of Operation Sport 40, which has led to more than 120 arrests since April.
