Frederick County Superintendent Noel Farmer to retire this summer

Frederick County School Superintendent Noel T. Farmer Jr. announced Friday that after 32 years in Frederick and Howard counties he will retire this summer. He plans to teach at a college or university and pursue work as an education consultant while remaining active with the Maryland State Department of Education. The resignation takes effect in July.

Missing K-9 Mick of Frederick County Sheriff’s Office

Pfc Gary Morton mourns the loss of Mick a 6 year old black Labrador missing since Friday. Mick was last seen at patrol headquarters and may have escaped through a gate with no fence holes found. Deputies searched from Marecie’s Choice to Buckeystown and Md 355 with helicopter help. Mick weighs about 70 pounds is friendly and should wear a silver choker chain. Impressions guides to stay in Frederick County schools

Frederick County school superintendent Dr. Farmer announced the entire set of Host Impressions teacher guides will remain in use after a unanimous committee recommendation. About 15 parents opposed the guides, claiming they encourage witchlike behavior. A written directive will require parental permission to use two readings, and appeals may be made to the school board.

Denise Davis chosen as Frederick County library director

Frederick County officials announce Baltimore attorney Denise Davis selected to lead the county library system. Davis, 42, will start June 1, replacing Martha Reynolds who retired after 26 years and is recovering from injuries. Insurance agency founder Vernon Coblentz dies

Vernon Coblentz 93 of Middletown died April 29 at Homewood Retirement Center Frederick. He founded Coblentz and Smith Inc and ran an agency in Frederick for over 50 years. A longtime insurer and community leader, he served in Kiwanis, church, and various associations, and supported Homewood and medical center projects. Surviving relatives include a Frederick sister-in-law and multiple nieces and nephews.
