Appeals for Full-Funded BoE Budget Draw Large Crowds

About 306 people packed Rosenstock Hall at Hood College on Thursday to urge full funding of the Frederick County Board of Education budget. Teachers led the turnout urging a 6.1 percent pay raise, about half of the contract level, while a separate group pressed for a legal contract for school support staff. The crowd supported the board’s request for county funding of 95.8 million dollars, though the county staff recommended 80.8 million with a 6.1 percent rise. If approved, education would be about half of the county's 157 million dollar budget.

Off Track Betting Opens At Cracked Claw In Urbana

The Cracked Claw begins off track betting today with 40 races from noon to 7 15 p m across Churchill Downs Pimlico Hollywood Park and more harness racing from Freehold Rosecroft Meadowlands and Balmoral. Staff plans for 15 to 20 new employees and possibly 50 to 60 later as crowds arrive for Kentucky Derby weekend.

Frederick lawmakers tour $26.3 million of state aid

Maryland legislators from across the state joined Frederick officials on a day long tour to review how $26.3 million in state funding over the past five years has shaped the city. Frederick Foundry closes division lays off thirty five

Frederick Foundry and Machine Co at East and East Seventh streets ends its foundry division and reduces staff by 35, keeping 15 in the pump division. The firm, formerly Frederick Iron and Steel, has undergone ownership changes since 1985 and 1989, with future plans to possibly revive foundry work at other plants.
