Locust Invasion Expected Early May in Frederick County
University of Maryland experts warn 17 year locusts may arrive by May 15 in Frederick, with males first and females a week later. They damage by egg slits in young trees and shrubs. TEPP spray is toxic and should be used cautiously. Entomologist Kemp noted the brood’s decline since 1902, 1919 and 1936, with likely disappearance by late June. County agent advises protecting young fruit trees, pruning damaged limbs, and limited spraying due to limited practical coverage.
