May Abandon Spraying For Jap Beetles
Frederick County lawmakers consider ending roadside spraying for the Japanese beetle and European corn borer. Dr George S Langford of the Maryland Extension Service says parasites and milky disease work well and most of the 6500 dollar county budget will fund these methods plus individual spraying and traps. The move would cut program costs while outlining success of the Lidella fly in checks on pests.

County program to fight corn borer beetle with parasites
The committee approved Daniel J. Thomas as program coordinator for the county pest control effort. A entomological technician will join the active campaign with a budget of 6500 dollars including 300 from beetle trap leases and 2150 for spore dust. Parasites purchase 400 dollars, traps and distribution 1700 dollars, and 1050 dollars for investigational work. Dr Langford notes variable pest numbers across areas and endorses parasite and spore dust use to reduce infection toward eventual elimination. Stainless steel decorative items in multiple colors are mentioned in a separate note.
