Confidant of John Brown William Lambert Dies by Own Hand
William Lambert, a wealthy Michigan Black leader linked to the Underground Railroad, died Sunday night by hanging in his woodshed amid temporary insanity. Born in Trenton, aged seventy two, he came to Detroit in 1830 and aided many enslaved people to Canada. Lambert met John Brown in 1858 and opposed violent plots, served in Brown’s Chatham convention, and led the League of Liberty. He was active in Masonic and Odd Fellow circles and left about $100,000. Miss Ells Winchell of Frederick departed for Baltimore to reside there.
