Maryland Gov Proposes Emergency Rules Protect Horseshoe Crabs
Gov. Parris Glendening proposed emergency regulations to shield horseshoe crabs from sharp fishing pressure. A 750000 pound annual quota, a 72 percent cut from 1996, creates a spawning sanctuary within one mile of Maryland’s coast April 1 through June 30. The plan limits crab permits to those with past commercial catches and sets daily landing caps.
