Daylight Saving Time ends and clocks spring forward this weekend with 2 a.m. Sunday as the official start. Winds shift from longer evenings to lighter mornings, while temps rise from 40s to mid 50s and 60s. Rain is forecast for several days, with snow returning Tuesday as a Monday night front cools conditions.
Linganore High School senior Russell Wayne Campbell, 18, died after a three vehicle crash on Md. 75 near New Market Friday. The incident involved a stop sign violation by a flatbed truck and prompted medical treatment for several students, with a crisis team arranged for Linganore students.
A Jefferson couple, Patrick Joseph Allen and Karen Jean Allen, were denied a sentence reduction for battering their two year old foster son. Each was sentenced to 10 years in Frederick County Circuit Court, after Judge Mary Ann Stepler previously imposed 10 years following a higher than recommended term. A sentence review panel is planned for May. The couple had planned to adopt the child placed with them by Allegany County Social Services.
Frederick County Democratic Central Committee nominated Susan Rovin Dr Earlene Hairston Thornton Mark Renn and Harry deMoll for two board of education seats. Terms of Susan Rovin and Claude Delauter end in June. Gov Schaefer will notify of further action.
Rep Beverly Byron D 6th plans another bid for Congress saying she will run though campaign costs have risen. She proposes legislation to cap campaign spending and PAC contributions, citing outside money inflows and ongoing redistricting growth across Frederick Montgomery Allegany Garrett Carroll Washington and Boward counties. Byron, 57, chairs the Armed Forces Subcommittee on Military Personnel and Compensation and serves on Interior and Insular Affairs and Aging committees.
Fifth graders at South Frederick Elementary collaborated with artist Mai Yo-Dinh to create a six by eight foot mural in the lobby. The piece features a black and white path symbolizing unity, with sections of wildlife, nature, and scenes of South Frederick, reflecting the students’ ideas and a multicultural vision.
