USDA Seeks Twin Calves From Washington Area Farms
U S Department of Agriculture scientists at Beltsville Maryland seek several pairs of identical twin beef calves under five months old for nutrition and breeding studies. Purebred grade or crossbred calves are acceptable, bull or heifer preferred, steer also needed. Purchases planned this spring within 25 miles of Washington DC to reduce shipping, covering Maryland Virginia West Virginia and southeast Pennsylvania. Nitrogen sources and acids in Maryland crops
Dr. James R. Miller explains nitrogen sources used in Maryland crops include anhydrous ammonia, ammonium nitrate, urea, calcium cyanamide and others. Acidity varies by source. lime neutralization costs are calculated, with basic forms offering less acidity. For most crops, yield gains align with nitrogen applied, so cost per pound of nitrogen drives fertilizer purchases.

Soil Incorporation Fertile Ground For New Weed Killers
Farmers adopt soil incorporation to mix pre-emergence weed killers into the top soil. Machines, including ground-driven and PTO powered models, bind chemicals into the soil for longer lasting effect with less crop harm. Vaccination Of Horses Advised Early In Year
Maryland veterinarians urge early vaccination of horses to prevent equine encephalomyelitis or sleeping sickness during summer. Mosquitoes spread the disease from wild birds to horses and humans, though horses do not transmit to people. Breeders should vaccinate and join mosquito control efforts to curb spread.

Pastures Can Yield Profits Like Other Crops
The article argues that pastures and hayfields can match cropland gains through soil testing lime fertilization and adapted grass legume mixtures. It notes renovation costs about $50 per acre, with top dressing and rotation doubling forage yield and preventing overgrazing by managing at least three pastures.
Pasture Upgrades Pay Off This Fall And Next Year
A good pasture can yield 300 to 400 pounds of beef per acre and gross up to $100. Timely top dressing and renovation boost profits similar to grain crops. Test soil, lime, and fertilize now, then reseed for higher production next year.
