Meat Supply Normal This Weekend
Maryland’s meat stocks are expected to rebound to normal levels by week’s end says the State Office of Price Administration. A preliminary check across Baltimore areas shows about one third of stores short, a third with fair supply, and half expecting normal deliveries. The OPA notes heavy weekend buying and a rationing order caused depletions, with shortages most acute in Frederick County and the Eastern Shore. Packers are to ensure supplies reach war plants and workers’ neighborhoods to prevent absenteeism.

Factors Behind Nation's Meat Shortages
Washington March 30 James Marl George Zielke discuss the meat scarcity with Agriculture Department officials outlining several causes. Heavy civilian buying by unemployed workers and war industry employees, higher living costs, and luxury purchases boost demand. Armed forces buys six months ahead and stockpiling by the Army, plus lend-lease reserves, worsen distribution. Black markets, price ceilings causing uneven shipments, and minor hoarding in freezers contribute further.
