Death Sentences Of Six Japs Commuted
General MacArthur commuted the death sentences of six Japanese war criminals who murdered three US Navy flyers in 1945. Frostburg March 28 Joseph Michael Freeland a 39 year old Potomac Edison Company employee died of a heart attack last night shortly after playing in an oldtimers basketball benefit game between the ions club and the Rotary club The Lions won 20 to 13 Freeland a Cumberland native had complained of not feeling well in recent weeks and after returning from Hagerstown said he was not too good While in the dressing room before the contest he complained of indigestion He played only a few minutes and died less than two hours later He had a tour of duty at Winchester Virginia and had been with the PE since 1930.

New York March 28 Ambrose lightship at the entrance to New York harbor was rammed by the inbound S S Santa Monica. Five Coast Guard cutters aided the disabled lightship which was listing and pumping water and fuel. The Santa Monica reported no damage or injuries. The cutter Mariposa prepared to tow the lightship to the Coast Guard repair base at St George Staten Island.
