Swiss avalanche researchers study snow and warning systems
Scientists at Switzerland's Snow and Avalanche Research Institute atop Mount Weissfluhjoch study snow behavior to predict avalanches and save lives. They maintain daily data from the Alps, issue warnings, and develop barriers and forest strategies to reduce avalanche risk. The institute, led by Claude Jaccard, operates under the Federal Forestry Department with a 1.53 million dollar annual budget.
