Abandoned Barn Destroyed By Fire Near Thurmont
An abandoned four by twenty foot barn on Pryor Road west of Thurmont was burned to the ground early Thursday evening. Firefighters from the Guardian Hose Company battled flames amid timber and wind with water from a swimming pool, keeping other structures safe. Scene kept under watch until 7 p.m. as 2,000 gallons were applied to the ruins and surrounding underbrush. Two other county fires, a pole fire in Braddock Heights and a grass fire at Vim Laboratories in Adamstown, were minor. Holy Week services announced for St. Joseph’s Taneytown include Good Friday and Easter Vigil observances.

Thurmont Mayor proposes east end bypass route
Mayor Donald L. Lewis presented an alternate bypass plan at the Town Planning Commission meeting. The east end route would start at the Esso station on U.S. Route 15, skirt the town, and join Route 81 north of Thurmont after passing the Leisner development and Thurmont Elementary School. The plan argues this route avoids central congestion and costly land purchases tied to the original path. Both routes will be presented for consideration.
