After years without such scenes, President Roosevelt and Mrs. Roosevelt frequently ride to the White House doors in winter. The president is an able horseman, often joined by Mrs. Roosevelt, while a cavalry orderly sometimes accompanies them. A recent ride left a cavalryman with a sprained ankle after a strenuous cross country gallop.
The House Committee on Foreign Affairs completed action on the Chinese exclusion bill and voted almost unanimously to report favorably. The measure expands the ban to cover the mainland and insular possessions, including the Philippines and Hawaii, with a prohibition aimed at all Chinese laborers and those born or present in acquired territories. Helena March 26 The entire Helena police force resigned claiming Mayor Frank J Edwards ordered arrests of anti Edwards Republicans to influence the Republican primaries. Edwards and supporters deny the charges and accuse opponents of bribery.
In La Junta Colorado a mob of about four thousand hanged W H Wallace a Pullman porter from an electric pole outside the court house after he was brought there for questioning. His body was riddled with bullets as the crowd cheered. The violence followed an assault on Mrs Henrietta Miller another Pullman porter was later identified as the suspect. Authorities faced a chaotic pursuit as sheriffs attempted to transport Wallace by carriage toward Sugar City then back to La Junta amid threats of lynching.
United Mine Workers of America, based in Indianapolis, plans for a broad strike across 24 states if negotiations fail in Pennsylvania and the Virginias. A ten cent monthly assessment from January may yield $25,000 to $30,000 monthly for strike funds as organizers target West Virginia and broader coal fields. The union aims to secure recognition amid rising tensions with operators and regional miners.
Philadelphia authorities state no reduction in anthracite coal price will occur unless miners agree to full week work. Three days a week is unacceptable to operators who threaten to close mines if the workforce is not restored. Firemen may strike to support miners in a mass labor action.
A blast at the Punxsutawney Mahoning Powder company plant killed three workers in the press mill building, with four inside at the time. Victims Clark Simpson Orrin Bergerstock and Joseph Weiss were all young and childless. The explosion shattered windows across Punxsutawney, a mile and a half away, and one head was found lodged in a tree 500 feet from the ruin.
