Committee To Reject Plan

Washington March 23 a Jam a survey shows the House Ways and Means Committee will turn down President Truman s proposal for direct federal relief for all needy persons. One committee member estimates at least 17 of 25 will oppose payments to persons able to work. The government now spends 1 100 000 000 annually in a matching program with states to aid the needy aged blind and dependent children. Arthur J Altmeyer warned the immediate cost of expanding the home relief program would be 200 000 000 to 250 000 000 a year. He said no one could state costs in a depression.
