Isolated Grindstone Island Lived Winterly By River Isolation
Grindstone Island in the St. Lawrence stays cut off for six months each year as ice separates it from the mainland. About 50 people live there year round, with 16 families in winter and a one room schoolhouse for 10 children. Residents rely on a power punt and sled crossings for basic needs, while summer brings wealthy visitors and a visible mix of islanders and executives. The community worries about sustaining the school and island life as aging families decline.
